Key Laboratories

The State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmissions was approved to be built by the former State Planning Commission in 1988. In 1991, it passed the national official acceptance and was formally open to the public. Since its establishment, aiming at the frontiers of disciplines such as basic theory of mechanical transmission, advanced manufacturing technology and methods, system integration and research and development of national core equipment, etc., the Laboratory has been the first to discover the photoflexoelectric effect in the world, overcome the design theory and key manufacturing technology of plane-generated double enveloping hourglass worm, cracked the core secret on design theory and processing method of Gleason bevel gear, broken the foreign technical monopoly and promoted the technical progress and equipment localization of China in heavy-duty vehicle, metallurgical equipment, marine equipment, ship, wind power, and machine tool, etc.

The Laboratory has won one prize from the Science Conference in China, three second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention, nine second prizes of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, one second prize of National Higher Education Teaching Achievement Prize, and 53 special prizes and first prizes for Provincial, Ministerial and Industrial Scientific and Technological Achievements Awards (wherein 39 prizes ranked first). In the past five years, it has published more than 2,300 high-quality papers, authorized nearly 700 international/national invention patents, and obtained over ten national ten million-level projects including the national aero-engine and gas turbine special project (two projects), major national R&D project, and the national key research and development plan project, etc., with research funding exceeding RMB 1 billion.

There are 11 research teams and 190 fixed researchers in the Laboratory, including 30 national talents like academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and awarder winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 6 scientific and technological innovation teams of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of National Defense, 2 innovation teams of Chongqing universities, 1,209 postgraduates and 54 post-doctors.

The Laboratory has advanced international research conditions, including 8 basic research and technical innovation platforms, such as transmission system simulation and high-performance calculation, and flexible manufacturing of complex conjugate surfaces of gear transmission. It has also established 8 joint technical laboratories with Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology and AECC. It is one of the top four research institutions in mechanical transmission in the world.
