Course Syllabus

5. Objectives:

  1. This course aims to develop understanding of control volume vs. material volume, conservation principles of mass, momentum and energy; Navier-Stokes equations.

  2. Develop ability to calculate pressure variation in hydrostatics and buoyancy forces.

  3. Develop detailed understanding of Bernoulli equation and extended Bernoulli equation.

  4. Develop ability to calculate losses in pipe systems.

  5. Develop a basic understanding of the boundary-layer concept and its usefulness in analyzing simple external flows.

  6. Develop a basic understanding of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and use of CFD software to simulate laminar and turbulent flow in a pipe, and laminar flow over a flat plate.

  7. Develop a basic understanding of dynamic similarity and its usefulness in engineering analysis.

  8. Develop a basic understanding of performance curves of pumps.

  9. Develop an ability to apply Momentum Theorem to flow systems.
